Porcupine Tree are a progressive rock band formed by Steven Wilson in 1987 in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England. Their music is difficult to categorize, being associated with both psychedelic rock and progressive rock, yet having been influenced by trance, krautrock and ambient due to Steven Wilson and Richard Barbieri's liking for the Kosmische Musik scene of the early '70s, led by bands such as Tangerine Dream, Neu! and Can. Since the early 2000s, their music has been leaning towards progressive metal.

The band are noted for their multimedia approach, with their live performances including screens displaying a different film projection to each song. This visual element was introduced during the tour for the In Absentia album, when the band started to work with Danish photographer and filmmaker Lasse Hoile, whose involvement has created a distinctive image for the band.

Despite being signed to both Roadrunner and Atlantic labels, the band has their own record label, Transmission, which they use to launch some independent releases and special editions of their albums. Their 2007 album Fear of a Blank Planet was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Surround Sound Album.

On the Sunday of Life...

1991. This is the first album of Porcupine Tree. Totally eclectic, a mixture of all the ideas of Steven Wilson can be found here. In fact he said that this album was done without any commercial claim. It is very good.

1993. Second album of the group in a special edition of the year 2004 as double CD. The first is the original album re-mastered and the second is an EP that came out in 1994 called Staircase Infinities, also re-mastered in 2004.

The Sky Moves Sideways

1995. The long themes of 18 minutes that has this disk remains the themes of the progressive of 70's. Impressive the first theme, with a clear influence of Pink Floyd. This edition contains a CD extra with a version of 34 minutes of the theme The Sky Moves Sideways.

Signify

1996. Record published originally in 1996. This is a 2004 edition as double CD, the first containing the original and the second with new things and alternative versions. An album very good with themes such as Waiting phase 1 and 2 or Intermediate Jesus, among other of high-quality.

Stupid Dream

1999. Record of the year 1999. The picture is not the original of the first edition, but this is better. The album has themes that reached popularity, as Piano Lessons or Pure Narcotic. This is a 2005 edition remastered and with a DVD.

2000. Record published originally in 2000. This is a later edition that includes a bonus CD not negligible. One of my favorites of Porcupine Tree, full of good songs and an style more progressive in the second CD.

Recordings

Record published for the first time in 2001. Collected material discarded from the recording sessions of Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun. The first edition of this album was limited and only a few of people got the album. After that, was impossible to find it. This is an edition also limited in 2010. Listening I have not found anything to discard, on the contrary, these themes deserve by themselves an album, as this one.

Although under the authorship of Porcupine Tree, this album is composed, interpreted in all its instruments and produced entirely by Steven Wilson. With four long themes, with clear influences as Pink Floyd and Tangerine Dream, aims to trans to music a trip of LSD. Very progressive, something apart of the line more commercial of Porcupine Tree.

2002. In this record of the year 2002, Porcupine Tree acquire a tone more hard in his music. Electric Guitars and acoustic well combined. This is a 2007 edition remastered and with a bonus CD.

2007. The appearance of this album has been an event at world level. In a few weeks already is located in the lists of progressive in the first place. It is said that this is the best album of Porcupine Tree. The disk is very good and, as Joan Prat said, the first theme, that gives title to the album, is addictive. Listen to it.

2008. Live Concert for a reduced public by Steven Wilson alone with his guitars, year 2008. He is accompanied on two themes by the guitarist John Wesley. It is a real delight listen to his known themes as Waiting, or The Sky Moves Sideways in acoustic.

2009. Last work of Porcupine Tree as double CD. The first has all the themes linked, without silences, as the conceptual works of the '70s. Wilson said that have to hear from start to finish. The second disc contains four songs.
